When approaching the clean and compact grounds of Tenjin Factory in downtown Fujiyoshida, you can already hear the “ka-chunk, ka-chunk” of the weaving looms at work. The looms are old fashioned; dutifully kept working through the years despite their age. “Newer machines can also produce linen fabrics, but you won’t get the same traditional texture or patterns,” says 3rd generation Tenjin Factory owner and manager Mr. Shinji Kobayashi.

About 25 years ago, as Shinji-san was taking over the silk necktie making business of his father’s, Shinji-san came across antique linen making, and was enthralled. He decided to shift the business from silk to linen textiles. He explains that “linen dries quickly, even in the rainy season here in Japan (when cotton products take too long). The more you wash them, the softer they get, and they retain their durability for a long time.”

Linen is a unique textile made from fibers of the flax plant. Flax fibers are tougher and more brittle than cotton. However, linen textiles are naturally quick drying, antibacterial, resist pilling, are cooler in the summer, and are more durable. At Tenjin Factory, one can feel the quality and care that goes into their products.

Tenjin Factory welcomes factory tours and customers to their attached shop, which displays their linen clothes, blankets, and towels. Recently they have been increasing their customer base abroad by providing product showings in Taiwan and Korea, and many customers also purchase from their online store. Tenjin Factory will customize orders to fit individual needs.
