Natural Disasters

Earthquake ・ 地震 ・ Jishin

Earthquakes are an indicator of seismic activity, or movement in the earth's crust, and are characterized by tremors or shaking of the ground. They range in severity and Japan, having seen some of the largest, most devastating earthquakes in the world, also experiences small scale earthquake very frequently. Precautionary measures can be taken to limit damages caused in emergency situations. It is recommended that each household establish and practice an official evacuation plan.

Protocol (What to do)

・If you are cooking or using a heater, extinguish the flames and turn off the gas supply immediately.
・Open an external door
(a door leading outside)
・Seek shelter under a sturdy surface.
・Do not rush outdoors
・Gauge the severity of the quake
・In the case of a severe earthquake furniture will likely fall. Wait until the tremors subside before you come our from under your table.
・When you sense it is safe, grab your emergency bag, switch off your breaker (shut off your electricity) and quickly make your way to your municipal emergency shelter/disaster relief area.
・Follow directions given by emergency personnel.

Typhoon ・ 台風 ・ Taifu

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone, also often referred to as a hurricane, and is characterized by powerful winds and heavy rain. Typhoon season in Japan lasts from June through September. Damanges caused by typhoons range from power outages, water supply ruptures, and gas failures to floods, tsunamis and even fires. Because Yamanashi is far enough inland there is little need for concern regarding large scale tsunamis. Nonetheless precautionary measures should be taken by each household.

Protocol(What to do)

・Pay special attention to radio and television broadcasts.
・Secure all windows and shutters
・Do not go outdoors

Heavy Snowfall ・ 大雪 ・ Oyuki

Snow should be expected during winter in Fujiyoshida. However there are instances when drastic snow accumulation results in emergency situations. Roads may shut down trapping passengers in their cars for extended periods of time, train lines may shut down trapping passengers inside for extended periods of time, residents may be trapped inside their homes, highways may become inaccessible by delivery vehicle and food and gas sources may become scarce, power outages may occur.

PROTOCOL (What to do)

** Above all it is important to be prepared for snow-related emergencies. Emergency supplies of water, non-perishable food items, blankets, etc. should be stored in cars and homes during the winter months. Travel should generally be avoided when weather conditions are poor and snow warnings in effect.

・In the event that you are trapped in a vehicle, turn on your radio and listen for emergency broadcasts. Pay close attention to electronic highway signs for information on closures and protocol.
・Humans can survive 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water but only 3 hours without sufficient warmth. It is absolutely essential to stay warm in your vehicle without exhausting your limited gas supply. Be sure to always have at least 3/4 tank of gas and to have extra blankets in your car when traveling in snowy conditions .
・In the event that you are trapped in your home, contact the local police or fire department. They may be unable to immediately assist you but it is essential for authorities to have record of residents trapped inside of their homes.

Household Emergencies

Fire ・ 火事 ・ Kaji

Fires can start in a variety of ways. It is important to be mindful of the various risks within your own household. For instance, in the winter months, it is essential to remember to turn off your kotatsu (electric heated table) and any free standing kerosene/electric heaters. Moreover if you are leaving your house for an extended period of time it is advised unplug any unnecessary cords and turn off your gas supply.

Emergency ・ 救急 ・ Kyukyu

Injuries are nearly impossible to anticipate. They can happen in the blink of an eye with no forewarning. General precautions should be taken in every household particularly those with children and/or elderly.

Protocol (What to do)

・In the case of a small fire, use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire
・In the event of a large, rapidly spreading fire, evacuate immediately and call for help
・Once safely evacuated dial 119 and get in touch with the local fire department immediately (provide the location of the fire, what is burning, and your name)

Protocol (What to do)

・Severe injuries that require immediate professional medical care should be reported to the first responder ambulance service at 119.
・Non severe injuries that still require medical attention should still be handled by a professional. Ready the injured party's insurance card and head to the closest hospital

Preparing for Disaster

It is highly recommended that every household ready supplies in case of emergency.

Supplies should include:

・a flashlight
・battery-operated radio
・medications
・masks and gloves
・cellphone
・cash and valuables
・spare towels and clothes
・matches/lighter/candles
・a 3-day supply of drinking water
